In this blog series, we’ll introduce you to some of our associates to learn first-hand about what it’s like working in various GEICO departments. Our third post in this series is all about working in the field as an auto damage adjuster.
Mary M., auto damage adjuster in San Diego
GEICO associate since 2003
Mary started her career in our customer service department in Woodbury, N.Y., and eventually transferred to the auto damage department where she has worked for the past seven years.
While working full time, Mary also earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration at Hope College, with assistance from GEICO’s tuition reimbursement program. As an auto damage adjuster, she is often the only GEICO associate with whom customers interact in person. She helps bolster GEICO’s reputation by resolving property damage claims quickly and fairly, while providing a positive customer experience.
One of Mary’s ultimate career goals has always been to become a supervisor at GEICO. In August, she’ll realize that goal and start her newest journey as an auto damage supervisor in Sacramento, Calif.!
What do you like most about your job?
As an adjuster, I have first-hand interaction with customers and I find my greatest satisfaction in helping them. Sometimes that means I get to be a listening ear. Sometimes I get to be a translator of body shop lingo, and other times I get to find alternate solutions to seemingly difficult problems. I love thinking outside the box and problem-solving.
What do you like most about GEICO?
I absolutely love the operating principles! GEICO has proven to care about its associates, works diligently to provide excellent customer service and has continued growth. The operating principles provide clear direction for the company and help maintain a positive atmosphere. They have proven to be a strong foundation and have benefitted me and countless others.
If you could tell someone ONE THING about GEICO, what would it be?
GEICO isn’t only the best insurance company to have … it’s also the best insurance company to work for.
What is your favorite GEICO moment?
Seven years ago in Woodbury, I completed the “SM-18 program” which is focused on learning how to effectively transition from a line employee to a supervisor. This course gave me a glimpse of what my future career could be and helped me focus my career goals. At the end of the course, we presented to several senior executives.
I remember the moments leading up to the presentation, I was full of anxiety and worried I would mess up. However, when the time came, I felt comfortable and empowered. It was at that moment that I made the commitment to work towards my career goal to be on the GEICO management team. I believed in myself ever since that moment … it defined who I wanted to be and I have never lost track of that.
What is your favorite GEICO commercial?
The first time Maxwell was introduced with his pinwheels. He is the cutest!
